C-QB exchange - question
By: Malcolm RobinsonSky has good tips here.
Let me add that you have to decide more basically what type hand action the QB will use in receiving the ball on the exchange. Some coaches teach the QB to insert his dominant hand ( rt for a righty, etc.) in the C's crotch about wrist watch deep, with firm pressure on the C's rear. The bird finger should be right down the seam of the C's football pants with the fingers spread widely, but comfortably.
So far this techinque is pretty universal. Its the off-hand that is the issue here. Some teach a technique where the QB rolls his off-hand under the dominant hand with his wrists touching together as if he was making an alligator mouth. I taught that for a long time. Its awkward and difficult.
Instead I now teach what I coinside is an advanced method. The QB (here he is right-handed) inserts his right hand as described above. Then his off-hand thumb is placed on top of his dominant hand thumb and the off-hand is swung off the the left (in this example).
The ball is snapped and the off-hand is swung beneath the ball as the ball comes up.
Also take into account that the QB has to have some elbow bend as he awaits the snap so that he can extend his hands as the ball comes up, and the C fires out to initiate his block.
The ball is secured and then "seated" below the breast plate as the QB executes what ever footwork is required (run or pass).
Another pet peeve of mine is that far too many QBs assume their stance with their feet way too wide. Their feet should be under their hips and no wider. This allows for the QB to ride the snapper and then be in a position to execute his proper footwork under control.
